Volleyball Rules & Regulations

Welcome! Here is what you need to know for this season
  1. Starting the Match: Matches are to be started no later than 10 minutes into the hour. Use of open areas is allowed for practice prior to match play with the referee&rsquos approval. Match warm up is started with a bump around, followed by hitting and finished with serving. Teams not ready to take part in any of the 10 minute warm up period will not be given extra time and the match will be started immediately. Serve/Serve Receive or Side is determined by flipping a coin with the winning team determining preference of serve/serve Receive or side. Serve and side will alternate throughout the match. During playoffs only when tied at 1 to 1 captains will be called again to flip for preference.

  2. Single Game Scoring: INDOOR - BY Backyard and BU Bumper games are scored to 15 and are won by a 2-point margin or a maximum score of 17. Sideout scoring will apply. DI Dinker, SP Spiker and VA Varsity are scored to 25 with rally scoring for the first 2 games and to 25 for the third game if time permits, if there is 10 minutes or less remaining in the hour then the third game will be scored to 15. DI, SP and VA games are won by a 2-point margin or a maximum score of 27 points for the first 2 games and 17 if the third game is only to 15. BEACH - BU and BY leagues will play 4 games to 11 with a cap of 13 with sideout scoring. DI,SP and VA leagues will play to 25/25/15 with a cap of 27/17 with rally scoring. Scores are announced by the referee prior to each serve in DI,SP and VA leagues. Example: serving team has 2 points and receiving team has 8---&ldquo2 serving 8” Rally scoring: points are awarded on each play, regardless which team serves

  3. Match Scoring: A match is ended at the completion of three/four games within the allotted time. All games count towards final standings. So, even if one team wins the first two games, the third one and fourth for Beach must still be played. If, with five minutes until the end of the hour, the third game has not been completed, rally scoring will go into effect. If with ten minutes until the end of the hour, the second game has not been completed, rally scoring will go into effect for the remainder of the match. Rally scoring does not apply to the DI/SP/VA levels as rally scoring is used throughout the entire match.

  4. Forfeits: A forfeit will be declared if there are less than four registered players from an individual team at the following times: 1 game loss 15 minutes into the hour, 2 games lost 20 minutes into the hour, match lost 25 minutes into the hour. If a team has four or more registered players but less than a full six person team, a legal game may be played with or without substitutes. A match forfeit will automatically be scored 0 to 3 games and 0 to 45 points for BY and BU, 0 to 65 for DI, SP and VA games. Three or more forfeits a season will result in not being able to participate in the playoffs.

  5. Substitution Policy: IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Substitutes from other Sports Monster same league teams are allowed and preferred. Opposing team may not challenge a same league Sports Monster substitute. Substitutes from outside that league are allowed as follows: 1 substitute must register with CSM rep prior to game and 2 sign team waiver. Opposing team may challenge suspected ineligible substitute to CSM rep, but this must be done before the game. For playoffs only one intraleague substitution is allowed teams must play with their registered/rostered players. Registered players are those that have signed that teams waiver by the 7th week. There are two exceptions: 1 if you know that you will be unable to complete the season, notify CSM a
