Sports Monster volleyball is offered in five (5) skill levels:
-
Backyard: The name says it all. Sports Monster`s Backyard level is the most recreational level available. Three hits over the net? Phhhht...It`s a bonus when the serve gets in & then to receive it can be an issue unto itself. It`s all about having fun playing Backyard. No referees for this level--we`re on the honor system here!
-
Bumper: Our intermediate level, Sports Monster`s Bumper is ideal for teams and players looking for more than recreational level play.
Bumper teams all attempt to bump, set and spike each time. However, two contacts are not uncommon. No paid referees for beach or indoor this summer but-- no jungle ball allowed here!
You will find most bumper teams to be comprised of one or two skilled players, one or two decent players and one or two unskilled players--any combination of the above making for an interesting dynamic. Jump serving is not allowed.
-
Dinker: Sports Monster`s Dinker level is our upper intermediate skill level for volleyball. This level is a happy medium for those players who`s skills fall somewhere between Bumper and Spiker.
Dinker level is the first level to have paid referees on court and players are expected to know the rules. Most teams have designated setters with some teams setting out of the middle front row position.
All areas of the game: serving, passing, hitting and blocking are played well but each team will have one or two areas of weakness or inconsistency that may be taken advantage of. There are no unskilled players at this level, some college experience players but the majority are IM, club or high school experienced players who execute and understand the game well. Spiker level teams will run 5-1, 6-2 and 4-2 offenses. Defensive court coverage is good. Jump serving is allowed. Our referees will expect a thorough knowledge of the sport and will call sets tightly. ***Starting the Winter 2007 season matches will be 3 games to 25, time permitting.***
Passing, setting and spiking are decent and usually about 1/2 the team is pretty strong overall. ***Starting Winter 2007 the Dinker leagues will be rally scoring and teams will play 3 games to 25 or an hour each week.***
All areas of the game: serving, passing, hitting and blocking are played extremely well and there will be little areas of weakness. There are no unskilled players at this level. Defensive court coverage is excellent. Jump serving is common. Our referees will expect a thorough knowledge of the sport and will call sets tightly.
Volleyball Instruction
Volleyball is hugely popular and very social. Because so many of us did not play until graduating, many people want to learn to play to get in the game or are looking to move up a notch to play at a more competitive level. So, how and where can you learn to play or improve? Sports Monster asked that question 12 years ago when we started our Volleyball College program that has had hundreds of happy graduates for our indoor and sand instructional programs.
All Sports Monster Volleyball Colleges are taught by experienced volleyball instructors who know the game. These are progressive programs which run 7 weeks and build upon skills from week to week. Usually offered twice a week each season, if you sign up for one night and need to miss a week, you usually can make it up on the other night upon request. Indoor sessions run 2 1/2 hours and Outdoor sessions run 1 1/2 hours. Both include warm-up, instruction and drills and finish with match play.
-
Undergrad level: If you have never even seen a volleyball before, that is perfectly fine and this college is a great way to learn. If you have very basic skills but need to learn overhead setting or the proper form to spike, this college is right for you. Backyard & Bumper level players are ideal Undergrad students--this program will definitely get you playing at least 1 skill level higher.
-
Graduate level: If you play Dinker or Spiker, the Grad level Volleyball College will be for you. This program works on basic skills but focuses more on the finer points of improving your game in setting, blocking, hitting and court positioning.
