Monster Spike 7/31 - Re-Cap
Thanks to everyone who came out to support Craig Beving's family via the Monster Spike Tournament. After some early AM rain, the skies cleared up by 8 so that we could play and, as you can see from the picture, it turned out to be a beautiful day. People traveled all the way from North Carolina , Indiana and Rockford to take part and celebrate Craig and his love of beach volleyball.
Craig passed away July 14th from Lymphoma. Proceeds from this tournament are going to help defray medical expenses. Picture above was taken at the end of the day (background has 4's final going on). In picture are Craig's parents who made the drive from Rockford to come out and a number of Craig's good friends from over the years who hit Montrose Beach with him.
Thanks also to Accelerated Sports Therapy for coming out to help stretch out some (and you know who you are) old bones to play on the beach.
Each team that participated in the tournament received a $50 discount to the upcoming EARLY indoor volleyball league at Windy City fieldhouse.
Next year's Monster Spike will benefit the Lymphoma Society in Craig's memory. We look forward to seeing our old friends as well as making new ones as this event grows to be even bigger and better.
Sports Monster has the largest
variety of leagues for your outdoor volleyball choices with 5 distinct levels of
play, men`s/women`s/coed formats and locations throughout the north side of the
city.

Sports Monster volleyball is offered in five (5) skill levels:
- Backyard: The name says it all. Sports Monster Backyard level is the most
recreational level available. Three hits over the net? Phhhht...Its a bonus when
the serve gets in & then to receive it can be an issue unto itself. Its all
about having fun playing Backyard. No referees for this level--we are on the honor
system here!

Bumper: Our intermediate level, Sports Monster Bumper is ideal for teams and players
looking for more than recreational level play.
Bumper teams all attempt to bump, set and spike each time. However, two contacts
are not uncommon. No paid referees for beach or indoor this summer but-- no jungle
ball allowed here!
You will find most bumper teams to be comprised of one or two skilled players,
one or two decent players and one or two unskilled players--any combination of the
above making for an interesting dynamic. Jump serving is not allowed.

Dinker: Sports Monster Dinker level is our newest skill level addition for volleyball,
as we attempt to find a happy medium for those players who`s skills fall somewhere
between Bumper and Spiker.

Spiker: Sports Monster Spiker level is our solid competitive level.All areas of
the game: serving, passing, hitting and blocking are played well but each team will
have one or two areas of weakness or inconsistency that may be taken advantage of.
There are no unskilled players at this level, some college experience players but
the majority are IM, club or high school experienced players who execute and understand
the game well.

Spiker level teams will run 5-1, 6-2 and 4-2 offenses. Defensive court coverage
is good. Jump serving is allowed. Our referees will expect a thorough knowledge
of the sport and will call sets tightly.

Varsity: Sports Monster Varsity level is out most competitive level. All
areas of the game: serving, passing, hitting, and blocking are played extremely
well and there will be little areas of weakness. There are no unskilled players
at this level. Defensive court coverage is excellent.
How to register to play:
- Click Upcoming Programs for a full listing of what is starting soon.
- Click on the league for full outline of any program you see listed.
- Once you know the program you want to sign up to play, click the select league tab
next to the league of your choice and follow the prompts.
- Note: If you are signing up a full team, the Team fee is what you pay with applicable
per player fees. Individuals who sign up by themselves pay the Individual fee plus
applicable per player fees.
How are you Registering? A full team with captain
paying? A team who wants each player to register and pay to play separately? A group?
Or by yourself? All options are found under the Registration prompt found to the
left menu bar or via the prompts under Upcoming Programs...
- For captains registering a full team,
click the Team option.
- For captains starting a team who want
their players to pay Sports Monster individually, click the Register as an
Individual and when prompted for who you want to play with, list the team name and
instruct your players to do the same. As long as the minimum roster size is met
by the start of the league, Sports Monster will honor these individually paid rosters.
- For an individual signing up more than
one person, click the Register Myself and Friends option.
- For an individual signing up to play with
a friend who will pay separately, click the Register as an Individual option
and list your friend(s) when asked who you want to play with.
- If you are signing up by yourself,
click the Register as an Individual option
Note that some programs are listed as a Fire Sale. These
are specially priced leagues and/or pricing that is available for a limited time.
